How to create the perfect morning skin care routine

Depending on your personality, mornings can be difficult — at least until you get that first jolt of caffeine.

But that’s no excuse to skip your morning skin care routine. Yes, morning skin care routine. You may have never considered it, but your skin has different needs in the morning than at night, which means it needs a few different products.

Your morning skin care routine doesn’t need to be complicated. Just a few simple steps will leave your skin glowing, protected and ready for the day ahead.

Why do you need a morning skin care routine?

First things first: why do you need a separate skin care routine for the morning? One word: Sunscreen. You obviously don’t need sunscreen at night but you do need it in the morning, even on overcast days.

Another reason is that the consistency of your products will often differ in your morning and night routines. You may want to use a richer, more nourishing cream while you sleep and a lighter moisturizer during the day. (And, conveniently, those daytime moisturizers often contain sunscreen!)

Your morning routine also depends on your skin type. Whether you have oily, dry or combination skin will determine the best products for your own personal routine. Need help figuring that out? Applying skin care products in the right order is important

The order you apply your products matters almost as much as the actual products (more on that here). Typically, you want to apply your products from thinnest consistency to thickest.

We recommend at minimum a cleanser, toner and moisturizer. Depending on personal preference and your skin’s needs, you can also include a serum or eye cream.

Just a quick cleanse

Since you, of course, removed your make up last night during your bedtime skin care routine, you can use a gentle cleanser in the morning to wash away any traces of last night’s moisturizer. This gives you a clean, fresh slate to start your skin care routine and allows your products to absorb correctly.

PRO TIP: Rather than pat your face completely dry with a towel after cleansing, leave it a little damp and gently pat the remaining water into your skin for a quick boost of hydration.

If you’re in a hurry, consider trying the Artistry Skin Nutrition™ Micellar Makeup Remover + Cleanser, which is applied with a cotton pad to remove any residue and gently cleanse your skin in a single step — no rinsing required!

Prep your face for the day with toner

If you choose to use a toner in your morning skin care routine, this is when you’d apply it. A refreshing toner prepares your skin for the next step in your routine.

Once known for being harsh and stinging your skin, today’s toners are gentle — and some, like Artistry Skin Nutrition™ Hydrating Smoothing Toner, can even add hydration while nurturing and balancing your skin’s microbiome.

Address any issues with serums

Next up, serums! There is an abundance of serum options to address any skin concerns you have, including hydration, spots, firming or wrinkles.

Serums with vitamin C can help fade sun damage and even out your overall complexion. And some serums, like Artistry Studio™ Glow-Tini Cocktail Booster Glow Maker + Hydrator, have a little extra sparkle to add some glow to your look while also treating your skin.

PRO TIP: Feeling (and looking) tired? Give your eyes a quick pick-me-up with a fast-absorbing eye cream like Artistry Skin Nutrition Hydrating Eye Gel Cream. It depuffs and brightens your eyes, plus it absorbs quickly so it won’t interfere with eye makeup.

Keep skin hydrated with a light daytime moisturizer

Many people prefer a lighter moisturizer during the day, especially under makeup. Heavier nighttime moisturizers don’t absorb as quickly, or sometimes at all if they’re meant to sit on top of the skin during the night.

A good daytime moisturizer is lightweight and non-greasy. An even better one includes sunscreen. (See next step.) If you tend to get shiny by the end of the day, the Artistry Skin Nutrition Balancing Matte Day Lotion SPF 30 will help keep you matte and fresh while offering sun protection as well.

Don’t forget the sunscreen

Sunscreen is without a doubt the most important (and final) step in your morning skin care routine. Even if you choose a bare minimum routine, make sure it still includes sunscreen.

UV rays from the sun cause all kinds of skin damage, spots, lines and health concerns. Including an SPF product in your morning routine will help protect your skin while you’re out and about.

If you plan on spending a lot of time in the sun that day, consider a higher SPF sunscreen like Artistry Ideal Radiance™ UV Protect SPF 50+, a broad spectrum sunscreen to help protect your skin from damaging effects of UVB/UVA rays, even during the peak of sun exposure.
